SUPER BOWL NOTEBOOK: Freeney a force early for Colts despite injury

Dwight Freeney's ankle injury may or may not have been greatly exaggerated.

All we know for sure after Super Bowl XLIV is that it did not greatly inhibit the Indianapolis Colts' defensive end from being a pass-rushing force.

After suffering a third-degree sprain and torn ligaments in his right ankle late in the Colts' AFC title victory over the New York Jets, Freeney did not practice the entire week leading up to Sunday night's Super Bowl against the New Orleans Saints.

But when the Colts took the field for warm-ups, Freeney looked every bit as intimidating as he has been since entering the league as a first-round pick in 2002.

Proof that he was able to remain a brute force on one healthy ankle came early in the second quarter when he abused Jermon Bushrod, the left tackle of the Saints, for a huge sack of quarterback Drew Brees that forced New Orleans to settle for a field goal.
