WHITTIER - California's Keith Smith knew he'd have to use his brains, more so than his brawn, to get the best of La Serna's Aaron Valdes in Wednesday's Del Rio League boys basketball showdown at California High School.
The Condors senior made that clear from the start by blocking Valdes' first two shots. By the end, Smith had eight blocks, four of them against Valdes, to lead California's superb defensive effort in a 49-47 triumph over its archrival.
Smith dominated the league's most admired player and limited Valdes to seven points - none in a wild fourth quarter - while collecting 13 rebounds as the Condors (9-8 overall, 3-1 league) set up another showdown Friday with Whittier (10-9, 3-1), a 50-49 winner at Santa Fe (6-10, 2-2), for first place midway through the league schedule
