Cal High health, culinary academies considered `golden'

WHITTIER - Students in the health and culinary arts academies are based at California High School, but their education includes focused career training from instructors at Tri-Cities Regional Occupational Program and weekly work experience at Presbyterian Intercommunity Hospital.

And now, the efforts of those three agencies are being hailed by the California School Boards Association, which has given its prestigious Golden Bell Award to Cal High for its health and culinary arts academies.

"The strength of the partnership lies in the commitment that the district, California High, Tri-Cities ROP and PIH have to the community and future of the students they serve," said Susan Sones, lead teacher of Cal High's Hospitality House/Culinary Arts Academy.

It does more than train students, Sones said - "it moves students toward further education and employment."
