Unitarian Universalists seek truth, meaning

CHICO - Like Goldilocks in the well-loved children's story, the Rev. Sydney Wilde went looking, as a child, for conditions that were just right.

In her case, the search was religious.

"My parents sent me to church with all the neighbors," she said.

What she encountered on many of those Sunday excursions was the message "ours is the only way," she said. It repelled her.

When she was in junior high school and high school, in Santa Ana, she read about all the religions, she said. "I had a Christian year and a Jewish year."

She finally found a faith just right after a friend recommended she try the Unitarian Universalists.

"It's a tolerant, open religion that allows for individual search," she said. It promotes "the free and responsible search for truth and meaning."
