Bags of pennies from young students' piggy banks will add up to quite a sum today at Morris School in McKinleyville after the kids worked to raise money to assist recovery in Haiti through the Red Cross.
The fourth-grade class of Phyllis Nolan and Elizabeth Rivera spearheaded the idea to put donation boxes around the school to support Haiti after the students showed great concern for the earthquake-stricken country. They raised more than $700 to donate to the Red Cross Haitian relief efforts.
In class, Nolan said they compared the Humboldt County 6.5 magnitude earthquake to the Haitian disaster, and discussed why the effects were less devastating here. It was a "high-interest topic" for her students, even after they understood the basics of the story.
"Then they started focusing on, 'How can we help? What can we do?'" Nolan said.
The students and their teachers decided to start collecting funds for Haiti relief by putting up signs and donation boxes to promote the cause
