AREA COLLEGE NOTES: Mt. SAC men making a name for themselves

When it comes to basketball at Mt. San Antonio College, most think of the Mounties women's team, which has set the barometer with four California Community College Athletic Association state titles during the past decade.

But this season, the men's team, under first-year coach Allen Caveness, has etched its own name for itself.

The Mounties, a middle-of-the-pack unit in the South Coast Conference North Division in recent years, is now among the state's elite, winning 21 of its first 25 games and earning a No. 7 ranking in the state and No. 4 in Southern California. Mt. SAC is also 5-0 in the SCC North, two games ahead of second-place East Los Angeles.

"We're fortunate," said Caveness, who turned programs around at Compton and Fullerton colleges before coming to Mt. SAC in the summer. "We have good kids who are competitive, work hard and want to make the most of their opportunities.
