THEN AND NOW: Racing is truly a family affair

What did we do way back when, without the Internet or iPods or TiVo or multi-screen cineplexes?

Well, the McIntosh family of South El Monte went to the race track. In fact, they still do.

This story begins when Roxie Macey was a senior at El Monte High School in 1964. She met, and fell in love with, Jess McIntosh. Jess was crazy about her. He also just happened to be car crazy.

How crazy? Crazy enough to drive in the Figure 8 races at Ascot Park. That's pretty crazy.

Roxie and Jess got married. Marrying Jess meant Roxie's weekends would be spent track-side, at Whiteman Stadium in Pacoima, or San Gabriel Valley Speedway in Irwindale, or the Orange Show in San Bernardino, or Ascot Park in Gardena. Turned out, she loved every minute of it.
