REDLANDS - The University of La Verne volleyball team may not have that sparkling record or lofty national ranking of years past and it might be the first time in a decade the Leopards didn't win the SCIAC regular season title. But they're no pushover.
The Leopards proved that turning back rival Cal Lutheran 3-1 (27-25, 25-15, 21-25, 30-28) in a SCIAC tournament semifinal Friday at the University of Redlands. They will face top seed Redlands at 6 tonight at Redlands for the tournament title.
The Bullodgs beat No. 4 Pomona-Pitzer 3-1 in the late semifinal.
"This team is starting to develop its own identity," first year coach Marlon Sano said. "It's not that we want to forget the past or what has been done here before. But we want to write our own book and this is just another chapter."
This is the first time the SCIAC's automatic playoff qualifier is being determined by a postseason tournament which is a good thing for the Leopards who were just third during the regular season
