For USC, desert could prove to be an oasis

USC FOOTBALL: Trojans eager to erase memories of loss to Oregon as they play against Arizona State.

TEMPE, Ariz. - November came a day too late for USC coach Pete Carroll, who is a perfect 27-0 in eight seasons at this time of year.

But while Carroll always rolls through the penultimate month, things are a little different thanks to that last day of October.

USC arrived here eager for a game - any place or anywhere - just to erase the memories of last week's debacle in Oregon.

"I'd be lying if I said we weren't mad," wide receiver Damian Williams said.

"It kind of ruined some things we've wanted."

Like a national title. And perhaps a BCS bowl bid, although Williams remained optimistic.

"We can still play in January," he said.

Maybe. But if the No. 12-ranked Trojans (6-2, 3-2 Pacific-10 Conference) lose tonight to Arizona State (4-4, 2-3), they might be spending New Year's Eve in El Paso, Texas - at the Sun Bowl   Read Full Article...
