Coaches need their breaks, too

For football coaches, health is always an issue. Those concerns, though, are usually centered on their players, rarely on themselves.

Thanks to Urban Meyer, perhaps football coaches, as well as their colleagues in other high-stress sports, will look inward. Coaching football is a stressful occupation, regardless of the level.

Just how stressful, you might ask?

Try this: Randomly pick 10 to 16 days out of your work year. Based on that small number of days, your entire year will be evaluated in deciding whether you keep your job.

That's the life of a head football coach. Whether it's a 10-game high school schedule, 12 games in college or 16 pro games, that's your body of work on which you're judged.

It's not surprising a high-profile coach such as Meyer is concerned about his health. The surprise is that more football coaches don't come forward and admit that their job is virtually killing them.
