Long before there was a Chief Osceola leading the Florida State football team onto the field, there was a Sammy Seminole cartwheeling down the sidelines in front of the players.
Sammy Seminole was retired in 1972, but one of the students who was the mascot is very active, even at age 69. Richard Miller, now living in Upland, and 81-year-old friend Jim Carter of Ontario are celebrating their good fortune over the weekend at the Palm Desert International Sports Festival and Senior Games.
Carter was first in the 80-84 age group in the nine-hole short-game golf tournament. Miller, unable to find a javelin competition, took first in the softball throw with a career-best toss of 119 feet.
Carter, who won a one-hole playoff after scoring a 37, is a retired teacher who has won city championships in tennis and golf. Miller, who retired from public health service in 1995, will turn 70 in October.
