There will be more than a collegiate basketball doubleheader between Vanguard and the host Coyotes tonight at Coussoulis Arena on the Cal State San Bernardino campus. It will also mark the end of an era.
Michael "Mike" Murphy will be stepping down as the school's sports information director after a 10-year tenure. For 35 years before that, he was a first-rate newspaper man working for the San Bernardino Sun.
In fact, for five years beginning in 1970, he served as sports editor for the paper.
"It's been a great ride," said Murphy while preparing for his last game as an full-time SID. That doesn't mean he'll disappear altogether as he will remain on as a part-timer for the Coyotes until athletic director Kevin Hatcher selects a successor.
"When I first started, we were working with Underwood typewriters and everything was hand-done," Murphy said. "So when you ask about the biggest change I've seen, it's the information age.
