Homelessness is a silent epidemic that affects every community in California. It is a problem that so many want to ignore, but ignoring these Californians will not make them go away. Our state already has the largest homeless population of any state in the country, as well as one of the highest rates of homelessness, with one in every 230 residents homeless at any given time.
California has hemorrhaged jobs in the current recession, and with every lost job there is an increased chance of adding another person to the rolls of those living on the streets, in cars, on a kind friend's couch or in a shelter. These are our sons, daughters, parents, grandparents, cousins and friends. Unforeseen circumstances can place any one of us in that situation.
This situation cannot wait for the economy to rebound - we must take action now to prevent future homelessness and help those already homeless find long-term assistance and ultimately a place to call home
