Those who can pay

e "Students need Cal Grants," Nov. 1.

I sympathize with the plight of college and graduate students having to fund their education. I am a graduate student paying loans on two programs, fully funding my own education with my own money. While all of us would like to have the government (meaning all the taxpayers) pay the way for our education, the fact is that the benefits of my education are far more my own and much less society's.

In other words, the person who most benefits is me. It makes sense that I should pay.

These college students are grown adults who have the capabilities to work, to support themselves. Rather than demanding "their share" of state monies (which likely mean that it will come from the K-12 system), it is more logical to take whatever funds we have and pour it into our children who cannot earn their own way.
