Community Police Academy gives insight to police work

SAN BERNARDINO - Area residents and business owners are being sought to participate in the San Bernardino Police Department's Community Police Academy.

The six-week course gives participants an insight in what the department does for the community and is a way for officers to meet those who live in the area, said event coordinators.

The free course will cover topics from personnel complaint guidelines to criminal investigations and will discuss the department's canine program and gang enforcement, SWAT operations and narcotic enforcement operations as well.

Those who attended Tuesday's kickoff meeting at Community Hospital of San Bernardino introduced themselves to Police Chief Keith L. Kilmer and explained they wanted to learn more about what the department does.

A few also expressed interest in becoming an police officer themselves.
