Camera helps in assault arrest

REDLANDS - Police arrested a Yucaipa man early Friday morning after a surveillance camera operator saw a fight in an alley behind a downtown bar.

The operator spotted the altercation just after 1 a.m. Friday in the alley behind the 300 block of Orange Street using the surveillance cameras directed at downtown Redlands. Police officers responded to the scene.

Investigators learned through witness interviews that a documented gang member, Jamie Avila, 25, was chasing victims in the alley, armed with a knife and a novelty-type stun-gun.

No one was injured, according to a press release issued by Redlands city spokesman Carl Baker.

Officers arrested Avila for assault with a deadly weapon.

"One of the primary purposes of the surveillance cameras is in preventing crimes, allowing us to intercede in an incident before a more serious crime occurs," said Police Chief Jim Bueermann   Read Full Article...
