October was the worst of times, it was the best of times. Halloween ended a month full of both scary and thrilling movements on Wall Street and beyond.

October was the worst month in the last 21 years of the Standard and Poor's 500 index, going back to the 1987 stock market crash. But the final week of the month was the best single week for the market in the past 34 years. In a month that includes both of those record numbers, it is not surprising that October was also the most volatile month in the 80-year history of the SandP 500 index.
One view of volatility is measured by the number of days the market moves, up or down, by 4 percent or more. A 4-percent move in the market is not a small matter. Think about it - 4 percent in one day. There were no moves of this magnitude from 2003 through 2007. There were three such days throughout the 1950s and two in the 1960s.
