Once upon a time in Redlands - in the mid-1960s - the city adopted an ordinance that prohibited any residence from being used for a business.

It took a petition launched by Lois Lauer to reverse the 1967 ordinance and make it possible for visionary businesspeople like longtime Redlands Realtor Russ Huston to convert a tired little house into a full-fledged professional office. According to a 1979 Redlands Daily Facts article, Lauer hoped the new ordinance would help retain the character of Redlands.

Almost 30 years later, Huston still occupies the converted residence at 312 Brookside Ave., and the house still contributes to Redlands' charm.
