Eric Salazar, 21

Eric Joseph Salazar of Mentone died Nov. 16 in Columbus. Ga. He was 21.

At the time of his death, he was serving in the U.S. Army, stationed at Fort Benning in the 3rd Brigade with the rank of specialist.

He was born on May 31, 1987, in Albuquerque, N.M. In 1988 his family moved to Redlands, where they began attending Redlands Christian Center.

He attended school in the Redlands Unified School District, graduating from Redlands East Valley High School in 2005. While at REV, he played on the football team.

In 2006, he joined the Army and served 18 months of combat duty in Iraq. He had hoped to become a member of the Special Forces unit in the Army. His family said he was proud to be in the Army and to serve his country.

Survivors include his father Lawrence Salazar, mother Donna Salazar, sisters Crystal Alvarez, Jennifer Lopez and Gabrielle Salazar and grandfather Roger McClure.
