For the great swimmer, Jessica Hardy, who will be honored tonight as Long Beach Athlete of the Year at the Century Club's Sports Awards Banquet at The Grand, the year 2009 was an emotional roller coaster of memorable victories, terrible sadness, immense earnings, lingering anxiety, extensive travel and, best of all, deserved vindication.
For the first seven months of it, she still was on the sidelines after being suspended the previous summer for testing positive for clenbuterol after qualifying to participate in four events - the 100 breaststroke, 50 freestyle, 400 relay and 400 medley-relay - at the Beijing Games.
She vehemently denied that she ever took any performance-enhancing substance, and the American Arbitration Association Panel agreed with her contention that she had been victimized by a contaminated Advocare Arginine Extreme supplement when last May it cut her two-year ban in half and allowed her to resume international competition in August
