These Saints improving, if not 'Super'

The St. Anthony High boys soccer team lost to Environmental Charter, 1-0, on Monday afternoon in a nonleague match at Clark Avenue Field.

This game, like most of the season, was about learning and improving.

Even though the Saints failed to pick up the win, they showed they are headed in the right direction.

"I'm trying to teach the game to the guys," said first-year coach Joe Cantu, whose team is rather inexperienced. "We have only one club player and the rest are learning the game."

Apparently, the Saints are getting it. After the loss, St. Anthony owns a 7-5-2 record. That's one more victory than the program had the last three seasons combined. And the Saints are 3-4 in the Santa Fe League, which puts them third and possibly in position for a CIF Southern Section Division V playoff berth.

"We didn't expect to win league," Cantu said. "But we didn't expect to win seven games, either."
