Mike Scioscia had his most challenging year managing the Angels.
Pitcher Nick Adenhart was killed in a car accident in April, and the Angels understandably struggled afterward. But under Scioscia's guidance, the Angels turned a season of heartbreak into one of success, all while honoring their fallen teammate.
The Angels made it to the American League Championship Series, but their storybook season ended as the New York Yankees dominated the ALCS and went on to win the World Series.
On Wednesday, the 50-year-old Scioscia was named the American League manager of the year. Scioscia had 106 points, including 15 first-place votes, in balloting by the Baseball Writers' Association of America. Minnesota's Ron Gardenhire was runner-up with 72 points.
"I don't look at it as a one-guy award, the manager of the year," Scioscia said in a conference call. "It's representative of a great effort of the whole organization. I think any manager would have the same perspective
