ANAHEIM - If the only reason Jeff Mathis started Thursday's Game 5 is because he's been the regular catcher all season when John Lackey takes the mound, taking him out of the Angels' lineup anywhere beyond this point would probably make the Rally Monkey screech in protest.
From the No. 8 spot, Mathis, the team's backup receiver most of the regular season, raised his postseason average from .444 to .538 with a three-hit night. And do more math on Mathis: He's up to .600 (6 for 10 with four doubles) in this five-game American League Championship Series.
That includes the winning hit in Monday's dramatic Game 3, which, before Thursday, was the only time Angels fans had anything to really celebrate in this series against the New York Yankees.
Mathis started the Angels' final three-run monkey-inspired comeback in the seventh with a single and scored on Bobby Abreu's RBI groundout to first to bring the Angels a run closer at 6-5
