Hope for first-timer - BOB HOPE CLASSIC: Bill Haas shoots a final-round 64 to narrowly win his first PGA Tour event.

LA QUINTA - Bill Haas is a winner now, too.

By sinking a nervous 1-foot birdie putt on the 18th hole Monday, the son of seven-time PGA Tour winner Jay Haas crossed the finish line in first place, eking out a 1-stroke victory in a marathon Bob Hope Classic that came down to the wire.

Bill Haas shot a bogey-free 8-under-par 64 to improve to 30 under for the event and claim his first professional victory, making it the third time in the past four years the Classic crown has been captured by a first-time victor.

Better yet, Haas' triumph marks just the eighth time in PGA Tour history that a father and son have won the same event.

Jay Haas conquered the Classic in 1988; Bill Haas squeaked by in a final-round birdie spree. All but one of the finishers among the top 14 shot 69 or better Monday.
