LA QUINTA - For the first time in 30 years and just the third time in its 51-year history, the Bob Hope Classic was rained out.
With the heaviest rains to drench the Coachella Valley in five years leaving massive puddles as much as a foot deep on some fairways, the second round was postponed Thursday.
If weather permits, there are plans for play to reconvene at 8:30 Friday morning, said Slugger White, PGA Tour vice President of Rules and Competition.
The 90-hole tournament played on four courses now is set to conclude Monday.
"It's a mess," said White, speaking into a microphone to be heard over the incessant patter of rain pelting the media tent. "I've been coming here a long time and never seen anything like this.
"We've got no place to play. And this is going to intensify in the next two hours and get worse."
If play also is rained out Friday, the tournament can be shortened to 72 holes and still be considered official. The forecast for the weekend is good
