Tourney stays true to form - HOPE CLASSIC: There are more low scores as Bertsch takes a 1st-round lead. Fowler shoots a 74.

LA QUINTA - Rain or shine, restful or roaring, it's almost as if the Bob Hope Classic can't help but produce super-duper low tallies.

It was true again Wednesday, as the tournament got under way for the 51st time, with Shane Bertsch vaulting into the lead with a bogey-free 10-under-par 62 on the Nicklaus Private Course at PGA West.

That total put Bertsch, a 39-year-old veteran of four Classics, ahead by 2 shots. There are four rounds remaining at the celebrity pro-am, the next couple of which could be dampened significantly by rain that stayed away for most of Wednesday's round.

A mile away, under gray skies at SilverRock Resort, former Murrieta resident Rickie Fowler struggled in his Classic debut.

With about 50 people following, the 21-year-old rookie sensation in the bright, poinsettia-colored Puma pants and matching "lighter poinsettia" sweater shot a four-bogey 74   Read Full Article...
