3-homer day lifts Lancers -

The defending NAIA national champion California Baptist softball team swept its season-opening doubleheader against Cal State San Bernardino 3-1 and 11-0 on Tuesday in San Bernardino.

Kendall Gorham was 5 for 6 with three home runs and five RBI on the afternoon for the Lancers, who begin the year as the nation's top-ranked team.

Mara Rodriguez hit a grand slam in her Cal Baptist debut and NAIA pitcher of the year Tory Ferreira (24-0 in 2009) was dominant, as was fellow hurler Emma Holden.

"Once we shrugged off the opening-game jitters, we settled in and played well," Cal Baptist coach Mike Smith said.
