Reeves' status key vs. Mississippi State - WOODEN CLASSIC: The Bruins will count on the freshman to help against 6-9 standout Varnado.

ANAHEIM - With Drew Gordon's departure from the UCLA program last week, freshman forward Reeves Nelson has taken on a more important role.

Now there's a question of how effective Nelson will be today against Mississippi State (6-2) in the Wooden Classic at the Honda Center in Anaheim.

Nelson suffered a corneal abrasion in the second half of Sunday's game against No. 1 Kansas. He returned later, sporting a pair of goggles, but couldn't see out of his right eye.

Reeves missed Wednesday's practice but returned on Thursday and should be able to play in the second game of the doubleheader at about 1:40 p.m. at Honda Center in Anaheim.

No. 15 Georgetown faces No. 17 Washington in the opener at 11 a.m.

Why is Reeves so important?

He'll be one of the players assigned to combat Mississippi State's Jarvis Varnado, a 6-foot-9, 230-pound senior who ranks 10th in NCAA history in blocked shots and leads the Bulldogs in scoring (14.1 per game) and rebounds (10.2). He's also shooting 68   Read Full Article...
