RCC's Rogers to take a leave - YEAR OFF: He says it is for personal reasons, but he expects to return for 2011 season

Riverside Community College baseball coach Dennis Rogers announced on Friday that he would take a leave of absence from the program this season for personal reasons.

Rogers is in his 21st season at the helm of the RCC program and took it from a once-struggling program and transformed it into a national powerhouse that has become a baseball factory for the minor leagues and four-year institutions.

"For me, this is the right thing to do," Rogers said, calling it a family matter that he declined to elaborate on. "It wasn't difficult. I had planned on this day happening. It was a timing decision."

Rogers, 59, said that he had no doubts about returning in time for the 2011 season and that he would still be actively involved in the program but limit his role and likely would not attend games.

In Rogers' place, the reigns of the program will be handed over to Eddie Cornejo, who enters his third season on the staff. Cornejo was the starting shortstop on the 2000-01 state title teams   Read Full Article...
