At last second, a surprise - Fontana Kaiser's Shirley picks UCLA over other schools, including USC

Hundreds of high school football players across the nation woke up Wednesday morning knowing exactly what they would be doing.

Fontana Kaiser's standout linebacker, Josh Shirley, was not among that group.

While most players were signing letters of intent to the colleges they already had committed to verbally, Shirley was still weighing his final options.

Shirley surprised family, his new coach and even himself when he selected UCLA over Washington, USC, Miami and Arizona in a last-second decision made at the Fox Sports Prime Ticket studios in Los Angeles.

Contrary to earlier indications that USC and Miami were the final two for Shirley, it came down to the Bruins and Washington.

"UCLA was always in the back of my head, but Washington is a great program," he said. "... It came down to the final seconds."

Shirley's relationship with UCLA coach Rick Neuheisel and location were the deciding factors.
