Oyler's dental work not paid for by the public, authorities said -

A photo of Raymond Lee Oyler's smiling face with a mouthful of braces brought angry reactions from people who questioned if taxpayer money paid for dental work on the man convicted and sentenced to death in the arson murders of five firefighters.

But Oyler's trial attorney and the Riverside County Sheriff's Department confirmed Monday that Oyler's braces were in place before he was arrested in 2006 and charged with setting the deadly Esperanza Fire and more than a score of others.

Over the weekend, blogs posted on the PE.com Web site and a small number of e-mails, phone calls and at least one faxed letter to the newspaper either wondered or presumed that Oyler's dental work was paid for by the public.

"Braces? He has braces now? How did that happen and who paid for it?" wrote a blog post from a PE.com reader identified as Jeannine.
