State and local public health officials on Thursday said that swine flu vaccines are distributed and dispensed as quickly as health providers receive them.
Dr. Gil Chavez, epidemiologist at the California Department of Public Health, said the state has ordered 3.5 million vaccinations for swine flu, also known as the H1N1 virus. That's half of the amount of vaccine state officials had hoped to have by now, he said.
"No vaccine is sitting idle," said Chavez, adding that providers get vaccines within five days after the state orders them.
Michael Osur, spokesman for the Riverside County Department of Public Health, said officials every day examine the number of vaccines and distribute them among the county's 10 family clinics. The department recently worked with school districts to vaccinate children throughout the county.
Statewide, more than 4,800 people have been hospitalized with swine flu-like illnesses and 266 have died since the virus first was identified in the spring
