Life lessons for Eboni McClanahan, 17, have been learned through first-hand experiences.
She and her family experienced the heartache of losing their home in Hemet to foreclosure.
"My mother had gotten sick and couldn't work. My father stayed home to take care of her and he lost his job and we lost our home to foreclosure," Eboni explained.
That experience taught her a lot about how financial matters affect families and helped her to win Bank of America's 2008 Achievement Awards Competition.
Her topic in the contest was solutions for the national housing crisis and to explain how it affects families.
The contest was brought to her attention by her fashion design teacher Diane Castro.
Castro nominated Eboni for the Bank of America regional competition.
She read her essay to a panel of judges and answered their questions.
"You were judged on how well you could communicate your ideas to others," she said
