Math whizzes' academic talent shines -

TEMECULA - Jenny Koenig and Jared May powered through every math course available in high school. Now the Temecula district has created a course just for them.

As freshmen, they started on an accelerated track with pre-calculus. By the end of their sophomore year, they had taken the Advanced Placement exam in second-year calculus.

Then came the college-level courses. They received credit from Cal State San Marcos for calculus D and linear algebra.

Recently, the Temecula Valley Unified School District board approved a new course called Introduction to Differential Equations, which is two years beyond calculus and also worth college credit.

"I'm so happy that we could get it to work out. I want to go as far forward in it as I can," said Jenny, 16, a senior at Temecula Valley High School.
