Temecula golf tournament to benefit Marines, families -

When they are not risking their lives to serve America, members of the U.S. Marines' 1st Reconnaissance Battalion serve their adopted community of Temecula.

Now a committee overseeing the battalion's link with the city is organizing a Sept. 5 golf tournament at Temecula Creek Inn's golf course to help the battalion's families. In October, the Camp Pendleton-based battalion will head to Iraq for the fifth time in five years.

The constant deployments take a toll on soldiers' families, who often find themselves without money for needs such as car repairs, said Jim Bailey, a Temecula resident and retired Marine who chairs the city's battalion adoption committee.

While the Marines have a support network, the families still need help, said Bailey, adding that many families live far from loved ones.

Many of the battalion's 400 Marines live in Temecula, and they actively volunteer in community events, Bailey said   Read Full Article...
