S.B. City Unified School District struggles to gain control over dropout rate -

SAN BERNARDINO - Although the dropout rate is not as low as it needs to be, school district officials said they are making strides through alternative education and intervention programs.

That was the gist of a report administrators for the San Bernardino City Unified School District gave the school board Tuesday night. Staff also discussed recent state test scores.

The presentation followed the release of a five-year study by West Ed, a San Francisco-based research organization. Released last week, the study concluded that while the district has successfully managed to get dropouts to return to school, fewer than 1 in 5 of them earn a diploma.

More than half of those who came back stayed for just a year, according to the study, which included district input.

Last month, the state reported that 34.5 percent of the district's high school students drop out, compared to 24.2 percent statewide. The dropout rate for black students is 41.6 percent   Read Full Article...
