SAN BERNARDINO COUNTY

Head of public health department named

Jim Lindley has been appointed director of the San Bernardino County Department of Public Health, said county spokesman David Wert.

Dr. Maury Manliguis, the previous health officer, blasted the agency's administrators for having little public health background and potentially endangering county residents with poor decisions. Manliguis, who resigned, had held the position only since the June resignation of his predecessor, Dr. Margaret Beed. She had the job for little more than a year.

County authorities said Lindley is a skilled administrator. He is the former mayor of Hesperia.
