An off-duty San Bernardino County sheriff's deputy is accused of assaulting a tow truck driver who had attempted to aid a burning big rig, handcuffing and threatening to kill him while twisting the barrel of a pistol in his ear, officials said.
Richard Charles Heverly, 41, an inmate transportation deputy at the West Valley Detention Center in Rancho Cucamonga, was charged Monday with four felonies in connection with the Aug. 10 incident on Interstate 10 east of Indio.
The La Verne resident surrendered to the California Highway Patrol and was held on suspicion of assault with a semi-automatic firearm, assault by a public officer, criminal threats and false imprisonment.
All of the charges filed in Riverside County Superior Court include the special allegation of use of a firearm.
After being booked into Indio Jail on Monday afternoon, Heverly posted bail -- set at $150,000 -- and was released
