Riverside County sheriff's deputies have busted another marijuana-growing operation, recovering more than $150 million worth of pot growing in the hills around Sage, south of Hemet.
A sheriff's helicopter spotted a camp in the trees Monday during routine patrol over the Red Mountain region, east of Temecula, sheriff's Sgt. Mark Sedgwick said. The pilot also noticed a patch of lush, green vegetation growing among the dusty brown hillsides.
As investigators began to search the area Monday, marijuana plants of various ages -- including some nearly ready for harvest -- were found. Deputies were initially called to the area over a concern of possible armed suspects. They found one gun, but no one was found near the camp, Sedgwick said. No arrests have been made.
A sheriff's narcotics team continued to clear the plants Tuesday. They are being taken in to be examined as evidence and eventually will be destroyed
