RIVERSIDE - Most of the 58 Riverside Unified School District teachers and certificated employees who were notified they might lose their jobs won't be laid off after all.
The school board voted 4-0 Friday in favor of an early retirement incentive program for 60 other teachers who will retire or resign at the end of this school year, allowing 51 teachers to remain in 2008-09.
Seven certificated employees -- five counselors, a librarian and an art teacher -- will receive final termination notices by Thursday as the district prepares to absorb a $23.6 million budget cut next school year.
The trustees also voted 4-0 to approve a 5.04 percent raise in salary for teachers. Trustee Lew Vanderzyl was absent.
Under the terms of the newly renegotiated labor agreement, 4 percent of that raise would be retroactive to Jan. 1. The remainder will kick in July 1
