The March Joint Powers Commission on Wednesday advanced a plan to allow general aviation at March Air Reserve Base over objections from Riverside residents who wanted more studies on the noise impacts of small planes, helicopters and charter jets.
The commission voted 5-3 to amend a joint-use agreement with the Air Force, which has consented to general aviation uses at the restricted airfield.
Commissioners Bob Buster, Ron Loveridge and Frank Schiavone -- who represent thousands of residents on the western side of Interstate 215 beneath the takeoff path at March -- cast the dissenting votes.
Loveridge, the mayor of Riverside, urged the commission to postpone its decision until September to give time for a comprehensive analysis of how neighborhoods would be affected at night by general aviation flights.
"There are economic-development issues and there are quality-of-life issues," Loveridge said. "I cannot support this now
