A woman suspected of stealing an SUV and leaving the owner's dog inside to die is in custody, and investigators are searching for a second person implicated in the theft, authorities said Tuesday.
Gabriela Briones, 31, of Corona, already was being held in a San Bernardino County jail on suspicion of drug offenses, a Riverside County sheriff's news release said.
Briones will be returned to Riverside County, where sheriff's officials expect she will face charges of vehicle theft, forgery and felony animal cruelty.
A Hemet couple had briefly stepped away from their SUV at the Riverside National Cemetery on Aug. 16 when a woman jumped into the vehicle and drove off, followed by a compact car. The couple had left their SUV running with the air conditioning on for their dog, Rebel, a 16-year-old wolf-malamute crippled from hip dysplasia.
The next day, police recovered the SUV in Moreno Valley with Rebel, dead from the heat, still inside
