Banning power plant's impact assessed -

BANNING - A proposal to build a power plant in the southeast part of town that would rely on treated sewage sludge for fuel has residents talking.

In addition to biosolids, the plant would use biomass, such as lawn clippings, to generate 15 megawatts of renewable energy for Banning.

The plant would operate on 20 acres at the east end of Westward Avenue.

At a recent town hall meeting, more than 200 people packed the Banning City Council chambers to learn more about the potential development.

Audience members peppered the speakers -- including developer Michael Bracken, representing Bakersfield-based Liberty Energy; the city's top energy official, Jim Earhart; and environmental consultant Jacob Hawkins -- with questions.
