Metrolink service resumed between Rancho Cucamonga and San Bernardino in time for the Monday afternoon commute after a freight train derailment in Fontana shut the line for more than an hour during the late morning, officials said.
Service was restored at 12:30 p.m. after the 10 a.m. accident that derailed six BNSF freight cars. The cars left the track in a rail yard near Beech Avenue, causing the end of the train to block Metrolink's main line between Los Angeles and San Bernardino.
No injuries were reported.
Some delays continued after the line reopened, but it was all clear by the afternoon commute, which began about 3 p.m., officials said.
"There will be delays, because we are hand-flagging through the area," Metrolink spokeswoman Denise Tyrrell said about 1 p.m. "But the trains are running, and we expect full service to be restored within a couple of hours."
The blockage happened late enough that it didn't affect the morning commute, she said
