Joyce Bianchi lives in one of the most Republican parts of Republican-leaning Riverside County, but that's never dampened her enthusiasm for being a Democrat.
"I was born and bred a Democrat," said the Murrieta resident, a retired teacher. "I feel for the poor. I can speak my piece as well as any of the Republican friends I have."
David Ajeigbe, a registered nurse in Riverside, said he believes strongly in the party's push to expand health care to millions of people without insurance.
"The Democrats care about poor people, the people nobody cares about. The rich people don't need anybody to defend them," he said.
As the party faithful kick off their four-day National Democratic Convention in Denver today, dedicated Democrats in Riverside and San Bernardino counties say eight years of President Bush have them feeling more connected than ever to the party touchstones that led them to register as Democrats in the first place
