As economy sinks, domestic violence reports rise -

While the poor economy has led to an increase in home foreclosures and job losses, Riverside County authorities say hard financial times may also be prompting a jump in domestic violence.

The number of domestic violence cases reviewed in July by the western division of the Riverside County district attorney's office -- which covers Riverside, Moreno Valley, Mira Loma-Eastvale and Corona-Norco -- has increased from about 200 to 300 compared to the same month a year ago, said Chief Deputy District Attorney Linda Dunn.

Dunn, who oversees the Family Protection Unit of the agency, said some of the increase could be attributed to changes in boundaries covered by her division, but that the economic downturn is a big factor.
