Police issued a warning Friday that thieves posing as nurses have been targeting senior residential communities in Murrieta for the past several weeks.
There appear to be at least two women involved in the scam, both estimated to be 30 to 35 years old, authorities said.
Murrieta police Lt. Dennis Vrooman said three complexes have been targeted since late July -- Amanda Park Senior Apartments on Skyview Ridge Drive, Grand Isle Apartments on Country Walk Lane and the Murrieta Hot Springs Senior Community.
In these cases, a woman knocks on the door, typically during the early to midafternoon, claiming to be there for a medical follow-up visit, a police news release said.
Once inside, the woman will take the resident's blood pressure or other vital-sign readings.
Then she asks to use the bathroom or creates some other distraction so she can take money, jewelry or prescription medication
