For two Winchester men, helping your neighbor goes far beyond borrowing a lawn mower or cup of sugar.
On Aug. 14, Chuck Donnelly received a kidney from Herb Lamadrid, who lives across the street.
Donnelly and Lamadrid attend the same church. So do most of their neighbors on Dogwood Court, a cul-de-sac in the Morningstar Ranch community.
"It's quite a cul-de-sac," said Pastor Dave Reynolds of Chorus Church, which holds services at nearby Susan La Vorgna Elementary School.
A job transfer prompted Donnelly, 50, to move with his wife, Peggy, to Dogwood Court from Mission Viejo five years ago.
About 10 years ago, Donnelly, the general manager for a Temecula restaurant, learned he had polycystic kidney disease, a genetic disorder that causes fluid-filled cysts to form in the kidneys. The organs -- people typically have two -- filter waste from the body.
The disease affects one in 500 people, according to the PKD Foundation
