Commission chooses Murrieta site for four-rink sports arena -

MURRIETA - A group of Murrieta parents and business leaders already had the plans for an ice/in-line hockey sports arena. They just did not know where it would be located.

On Wednesday, the Inland Valley Sports and Arena Commission found a home for the $6 million facility as the focal point of a 26-acre development along Los Alamos Road that would include a hotel, restaurants and retail shops.

"This is an exciting step for us," said Bob Gibbons, who has led the effort to get the facility built. "Our first obstacle has been cleared. Now we need to go out and raise money to build."

The 100,000-square-foot facility would be split into four rinks -- two for ice hockey and two for in-line hockey. Two ice rinks could be removed to allow for trade shows and other sporting events or be turned into more in-line skating rinks.

The two in-line skating rinks would be outdoors under a steel roof.
