Hemet Unified district launches conservation program -

As Inland school districts anticipate increases in electricity and other utility rates while bracing for lean budgetary times, officials at Hemet Unified say they are trying to attack both challenges at once.

They just launched a districtwide electricity, water and gas conservation program, which will enlist school administrators, teachers, custodians and students to help Hemet Unified trim its utility bills so that the dollars saved can go back into the cash-light classroom.

Richard Beck, assistant superintendent for business services, is spearheading the plan. It aims to save the district at least $300,000 in utility costs during the 2008-09 school year. Beck expects electricity rates to rise 7 percent or more per year in coming years.
